4 Reasons To Go For A Walk

The other month I made a goal for my dog and I.

We were going to spend 10-15 minutes daily walking or playing together.

But, this is not only for the physical and mental benefits.

Let's explore why walking is vital for our pets' well-being.

1. Walks release pent-up energy

It’s crucial for dogs to release their energy after being left alone during your workday.

It lets them explore, and interact with you, other dogs, and people, curbing destructive behaviors such as chewing, digging, and scratching.

2. Walking supports training efforts

During walks, there are ample training chances.

Commands like 'sit,' 'stay,' 'wait,' and 'leave it' can be practiced.

For instance, you can ask your dog to sit before leash-up, when crossing roads, or when encountering other dogs. 'Leave it' is handy when your dog investigates something off-limits.

As you encounter different stimuli on your walks, such as skateboarders, cyclists, and noisy trucks, it's an excellent opportunity to teach your dog proper responses to external stimuli.

3. Walking maintains your pup's fitness

This one should seem obvious. However, often pet owners discover during their dog's annual check-up that their furry friend has gained some extra pounds.

Overweight dogs face a greater risk of various health issues. While pet insurance can assist with unexpected vet bills, it's essential to strive for your dog's optimal fitness for their well-being.

4. Walking enhances and enriches life

Not only is this for your dog, but it’s for both of you.

Research from the Mayo Clinic reveals that aside from obvious health advantages, walking can boost your mood, enhance balance and coordination, and strengthen your bones.

Likewise, for your pet, walking aids weight management, enhances agility, and aids digestion.

If your pet isn't inclined to walk, you can still enjoy these benefits by taking your cat, ferret, or chinchilla for a stroll in a pet stroller (at least for your own well-being).

Helpful Knowledge: A study published by the American Journal of Sports Medicine in 2006 showed that short walks after dinner were more effective than long exercise sessions in reducing the amount of fat and triglyceride levels in the bloodstream after a hearty meal

So, plan your walk right after a meal.  Clear the table and put on the leash.  The dishes can wait for 10 minutes.  Man’s best friend will thank you for it.
